For Your Business

Making small changes in warehouses, factories, offices and shops can return surprising benefits both financially and environmentally. Encouraging good habits for staff and considering everyday interactions with equipment is something you can implement and look forward to the feel-good factor in return.

Office:

  • If there are multiple people in the office, find the lowest temperature that keeps everyone happy. You may find it was too warm and it can be lowered down by a degree or two
  • Unplug appliances and devices when they’re not in use – standby mode still uses energy
  • Switch off lights when areas or rooms are not in use
  • Switch out old light bulbs for newer, energy efficient LED ones
  • Consider getting timer or sensor lights for areas that are less commonly used, like corridors or bathrooms
  • Encourage more efficient use of kettles, dishwashers and other appliances in the office kitchen – only boil water you need, only put on a full load of dishes, keep the fridge door closed
  • Investing in insulation can make a big difference to indoor temperatures. Make sure ceilings, walls, floors are well insulated
  • Putting desks too close to radiators or air conditioning vents can have negative impact on comfort
  • Get a smart meter installed to see energy use in real time – that way you can figure out what’s using a lot of energy and work out if its use can be reduced
  • Regular air conditioning maintenance keeps the system working efficiently. Find out more about Mastertech HVAC services.
  • Mastertech can assess your site for solar panels installation to make your office more energy efficient

Warehouses and Factories:

  • Upgrade old equipment to newer, more energy efficient machinery
  • Keep equipment well maintained to make it run more efficiently
  • Turn machinery off when it’s not in use for long periods of time i.e at night
  • Use less light bulbs in areas where light isn’t needed as much
  • Use LED lighting and bulls for more energy efficient lighting
  • If you have a HVAC unit, keep it at a temperature that keeps your staff and your products at a comfortable temperature – don’t have it too cold if it doesn’t need to be
  • Get air conditioning units regularly maintained. Find out more about Mastertech HVAC services
  • Use good air conditioning controls and carefully consider where vents are needed. Our HVAC team can discuss this with you
  • Invest in good wall insulation to avoid losing heat or cool air
  • Keep doors (including roller doors) closed when not in use
  • Implement an energy saving system or devise an energy saving plan – assessing the layout of equipment and machinery can help to save energy (e.g. less lighting may be needed on one side of the floor if machinery is to the other side)
  • Plan regular staff training on saving energy in the workplace
  • Get solar panels installed to make your facility more energy efficient

Retail:

  • Keep the temperature comfortable for shoppers and staff – don’t have it too warm in the winter or too cool in the summer.
  • Turn the heating down by one degree or the air conditioning up by one degree to see a cost saving
  • Encourage staff to switch off lights in stock rooms, kitchens etc when not in use
  • Turn off heating half an hour before the shop closes – if doors are closed the store will retain heat for long enough
  • Keep doors closed to encourage heat or cool air retention. It’s ok to keep the door open at peak times, but just remember to close it again when it’s quieter
  • Switch off equipment and lights when the shop is closed
  • Encourage more efficient use of kettles, dishwashers and other appliances in the office kitchen – only boil water you need, only put on a full load of dishes, keep the fridge door closed.
  • In shops where cooling units (such as refrigerators for food) are required keep doors closed and try to store multiple items in the same areas to therefore have fewer units
  • Get air conditioning units regularly maintained. Find out more about Mastertech HVAC services
  • Get solar panels installed as a way of making your shop more energy efficient
